Departure: 14 Days. Time to Panic!!

Just kidding. Most of you following this blog know I'm not much on panicking, though I have certainly been working more diligently toward readiness. It's almost surreal, like when I'm planning for and executing a PCS (that's military for Permanent Change of Station, for all you civilians). It always somehow gets done, but the more prep work one does, the smoother it goes. Generally.

So since my last post (that was a long time ago!!) we have obtained a much more portable and (I think) web friendly camera so that you all can be enlightened about our journey by some photos, as well. I suppose I need to make sure it's good to go on the laptop; wouldn't do any good to have the software on the house computer...one more thing to add to the list.

We have also borrowed a hardside cargo thingie for the van's roof from the family of a guy who works with the Professor (we'll call them Han and Leah). We are very grateful for their generosity!!

A suggestion as to what to call said van was made by another friend (we'll call her Mary Poppins, as she is practically perfect in every way--at least with the runnings of our church!). She said we should call it "The Wessel Vessel." Very clever, I must say. Maybe we'll have a Christening of the Wessel Vessel before we leave...that would be a photo op, wouldn't it??

I did bite the bullet and purchase the new map updates for our GPS (even though we made it just fine through DC with 4 year old maps, I figured it might be prudent to not spend more time in the car, getting lost, if it can be helped), and I just received my Annual National Parks Pass in the mail, as well as some books and books on tape I ordered for the trip. The crew is over the moon (NOT) about Mary Ann-imposed reading time...ha, I have a captive audience! They will also be journaling about the trip; they are thrilled about that, as well. Also on my list is finding pics of license plates . Not necessarily license plate bingo, but something with all 50 state plates on them, to see how many we can spot.

Does anyone have any other suggestions (besides the DVD player) for things to occupy on long journeys?? I'd love to hear your ideas. Next week, I'll be getting into my lists...

  1. We used to have Car BINGO cards. They had things like, speed limit signs, overpass, stop sign. You get the picture. We found them at Cracker Barrel once upon a time. You could enlist Ginger & Gilligan to just make some up.

We play the slug bug game, only no slugging. Just keep a tally to see who can get the most bugs in one day.

    The A, B, C, sign game.

I'll stop back if I think of anything else.
